Mickey made it home for the holidays!
Before Habitat, Mickey’s life was a whirlwind of pain, survival, and the constant search for stability. For years, she battled addiction, heartbreak, and the lasting scars of abusive relationships. Her world was filled with uncertainty, moving from couch to couch, never knowing where she’d sleep next. But even in the darkest seasons, Mickey held onto something stronger than despair: hope.
A mother of two and now a proud grandmother, Mickey always dreamed of a better life for her family. Her oldest son has grown into a strong, independent man. Her daughter Nya, a bright, artistic soul who loves all forms of creativity, still lives with her, and will soon begin CNA training. Together, they’ve walked this road hand in hand.
When a coworker encouraged her to apply for a Habitat home, Mickey hesitated. “Good things like this just didn’t happen to me,” she said. But despite the doubt, she filled out the application, holding onto the smallest thread of belief.
Then came the call.
“When Habitat welcomed me, it was so comforting… it didn’t feel real,” Mickey remembers. “I didn’t think I could be the lucky one.” But Habitat saw her not for her past—but for her strength, her heart, and her future.
Today, Mickey stands tall in her power. She’s been sober from drugs for 14 years, and from alcohol for 6. She’s held her job for over five years and is breaking sales records at her store, with no plans of slowing down. But it’s not the numbers she celebrates most. It’s her faith, her recovery, and the unwavering love she has for her children that fills her with pride.
Now, she’s finally planting roots.
“This is my forever home,” Mickey says. “It’s my happily ever after.”
At Habitat, we believe everyone deserves a safe place to call home. Mickey’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when courage meets opportunity—and when a door finally opens for someone who’s spent years fighting to find one.
She’s didn’t just build a house.
She’s built a legacy of healing, strength, and hope for herself, for her family, and for the future.
We’re excited to share that construction is officially done on Mickey’s home on 10th Street! Thank you again to everyone who made this possible.
